After a difficult and somewhat bittersweet year for many writers, another edition of the most eagerly awaited festival all year long by readers or literature lovers, I am indeed talking about our beloved Madrid Book Fair, which attracted more than 2,300,000 visitors from all over the world in 2019 and raised approximately 10 million euros with a total of 550,000 copies sold. The success of this fair is and was resounding and already many people are wondering when the next edition will be held: the wait has not been long, and immediately since February 2, it is known that the 2021 Book Fair will begin on September 10 (Friday) and will end on September 26 (Sunday). However, we have heard a lot about the Book Fair, but no one has ever explained it as such, specifically, what is the book fair? Or rather, what is done at the book fair? What are its origins? What is the Book Fair? The Madrid Book Fair is an event held since 1933 to promote reading, literary culture and of course, the activity of entrepreneurs or institutions dedicated to literary publishing. These celebrations, before the health crisis, held at the end of May, beginning of June, currently revolve around three main activities: a) Book displays: Lately it is the main attraction of this event, writers of all ages and from different professions come to sign their books for a limited time. So if you are thinking of going this year and want to find out the schedules and dates of the book signings, you can find them in the second section: Madrid Book Fair 2021. b) Book signings: Lately it is the main attraction of this event, writers of all ages and from different professions come to sign their books for a limited time. So if you are thinking of going this year and want to find out the schedules and dates of the book signings, you can find them in the second section: Madrid Book Fair 2021. c) Workshops or other activities: Unfortunately this year it doesn't seem to be that there will be many workshops or conferences given the health situation, but you can always find out the latest news on the hashtags #FLMadrid21 , #80aniversario , #laferiadelreencuentro or on the official accounts of the Book Fair: Likewise, if you want to contact them you can visit from here their contact page on their official website or write to them at the following e-mail address [email protected] . Now, as I said before, the origin of the Madrid Book Fair dates back to 1933 in Paseo de Recoletos, a group of Madrid booksellers gathered there to sell their goods. From then on it was held until 1936, when it became official, but that same year, with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, it was not celebrated again until 1944. Finally, to this day, the success that this fair had little by little caused that in many areas of Spain commemorative events of the same type were held, in places like Barcelona or Seville. Some curious facts are: 1.- From 1944 onwards, the organizer of the event became the Spanish National Book Institute (INLE in spanish). 2.- The Madrid Book Fair has been held every year since 1944, except in 1950 and 1954, when it was suspended. 3 .- In 1967 the Book Fair moves to where it is currently held, El Retiro Park. 4 .- In 1979 the fair is moved to the Palacio de Cristal de Casa Campo, but given its failure, the next year it was moved back to El Retiro. 5.- The last edition organized by the Spanish National Book Institute was in 1981, and the next year it would be organized by an inter-industry commission of booksellers, publishers and distributors. 6.- The 76th edition (2017) was full of emotions: the kings of Spain inaugurated the fair, the youtuber Luna Dangelis had the longest queue at the fair with her book with her book “Crea tus sueños” (Create your dreams), and the writer Blue Jeans had a resounding success with his book Algo tan sencillo como estar contigo (Something as simple as being with you). 7.- This 80th edition will be marked by Colombia as Guest of Honor and by the hope of reconstruction from the crisis with the slogans. #laculturaenpie and #poyaatulibreria . MADRID Book Fair 2021 So, this edition is no less than the previous one and will be held with all the necessary measures against the coronavirus, to take a look at the health recommendations drawn up by the same organization click here. Following the event, the promotional poster for the 2021 Book Fair was created by Madrid-based illustrator Andrea Reyes. Done in watercolor, the author wants to pay tribute to the history of the Book Fair, facing a “past of tradition, a present of action and a future of hope [...]", symbolically represented by a nostalgic adult woman, a young girl writer and a little boy with a long future that imposes itself before him in the form of a bird that holds out a pencil to "write his story [...]". In my modest opinion, I think that the illustration undoubtedly represents the values of the fair, it is unbeatable, there couldn't be a better poster than this one to represent the event, on the other hand, the author invites us to discover the rest of the details hidden in the illustration.
